Race Details
The Hill Race forms part of the Winster Wakes week-long carnival.
Our race is an 'undulating' 4 miles/6.4 kilometers using the lanes, trails and fields, through gates and narrow stiles and paths around the village.
The course is marshalled at junctions and partially marked up with tape elsewhere to assist navigation.
It is suitable for all levels of runner. Challenging for the experienced runners and a great introduction to hill running for new runners.
Minimum entrant age is 14 years on the date of the race.
Anyone running as a competitor Guide will have free entry. We would ask that either the Guide or competitor notify the organisers, in advance, at winsterhillrace@gmail.com to make arrangements to enable smooth number collection and/or registration on the night.

Route Description
Flat metalled start becoming a fast predominantly downward sloping opening mile where you can challenge your 1 mile/1.6 km PB.
Turn right onto Birchover Lane upon which you then reach the 1st bump of the day of 0.16 mile/0.26 km with a 262 ft/80 m climb.
At the top of the hill a turn left onto a public footpath into a few rolling fields to recover, This section is uneven and single track in many places.
There is then a sharp drop back down to the A5056 road. This section is a steep field with a mix of footpath and mixed depth wooden/gravel steps, exiting via a raised walkway to a stile onto the road.
Care needed here when running and crossing to Dudwood Lane for a slightly mean 0.5 mile/0.88 km incline with a 94 ft/30 m climb up to the next road crossing.
Cross the Elton Road onto Islington Lane (an unmetalled track) and catch your breath for 657 ft/200 m before the final short climb. Islington Lane has two narrow sections, one downhill and one uphill, where you will need to run in single file.
At the top you exit Islington Lane, back across the B5056 to West Bank, opposite the Miners Standard pub on your left (but you need to keep going).
You then cross to the top of East Bank for the final 875 yards/800 m mad dash downhill through the village, where the race ends in front of the Bowling Green pub.
The event finishes at 8.30 pm so you need to aim to have completed the course in about 1 hour 15 minutes.
There will be tail runners so you won't be last!
