Winster Country Show

The Country Show was established in Winster as part of Wakes Week after it was recognised that the area lacked a village show where creative people could present handmade items of many kinds in a friendly and competitive atmosphere.

A marquee was already a feature of Wakes Week and was situated in a field near The Miners Standard. It was used for many of the activities during the week and with the help of enthusiastic and creative volunteers the marquee became the home of a one day Country Show in Winster.

After moving to the Sports Field near to the school the marquee remains the home of the Country Show which is traditionally held on the Thursday of Wakes Week. With no charge for entry the competitive categories are open to all and are aimed at making everyone feel included and welcome.

Entries are judged blind during the late morning with the public excluded. Judges award 1st, 2nd and 3rd  prize certificates in each category before a relaxed early  afternoon cafe setting sells hot drinks, squash and cakes to anyone coming to see the results and admire the work on display.

The show could not operate in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic but was revived in 2022 when handmade and homemade items and home grown produce once again proved how many different creative talents were alive within the village and surrounding area.

Regular releases of information about the 2023 Country Show began in February  using The Village Magazine and Winster Community Facebook page which allowed time for those interested in competing the time to plan and make their entries. Further publicity is to be released as the date of the show draws nearer.

In 2023 the Country Show will be held on Thursday 29th June. Garden produce, baking, jam making, paper craft, yarn craft, decorative sewing, wood and metalwork all have a place on the show schedule with children’s and adult classes for flower arranging strongly influenced by the need to protect the environment.

If you would like to see any updated information about the show, including the timings for the day, please refer to The Village Magazine, Winster Community Facebook group and posters which it is hoped will be displayed and distributed around the village and locality.
